ANNUAL SALARY RANGE: $47,393.00 - 78,989.00 (Salaries are paid biweekly)

SUMMARY: Public Engagement Specialist for Mediation and Restorative Justice Services Programs, City of Fort Collins Community Development and Neighborhood Services.


The Public Engagement Specialist provides volunteer management and community outreach, coordination and administrative services and program support for the Restorative Justice and Community Mediation programs. This is a full-time, one year contractual position with possible renewal.


Volunteer Management

  • Manage the Volunteer Application process
  • Co-train new volunteers
  • Attend City-wide volunteer management meetings
  • Use City-wide volunteer management technology and assist volunteers in using the technology
  • Manage volunteer files
  • Create, write and distribute volunteer newsletters
  • Schedule, organize and participate in volunteer meetings and trainings; take minutes as needed

Community Outreach

  • Manage internal and external outreach for all Mediation and Restorative Justice Programs
  • Lead merchant outreach effort for the RESTORE Program
  • Find and implement ways to collaborate with merchant community and general community
  • Program material creation (brochures, handouts, power points, flyers, etc.)

Program Support

  • Co-coordinate the RESTORE program
  • Conduct intake meetings with Mediation/Restorative Justice clients
  • Facilitate restorative justice conferences and meetings
  • Co-mediate and/or observe mediation sessions as needed
  • Make referrals to community resources
  • Jointly supervise Mediation and RJ interns

Technical Project Lead

  • Manage website revisions/updates
  • Design and develop power point presentations and videos for MRJ team
  • Assist with any project that requires technical knowledge

Administrative Support

  • Perform data entry for restorative justice cases
  • Assist with data entry for mediation cases as needed
  • Prepare MRJ staff meeting agendas and take minutes
  • Assist with scheduling and room set up for meetings, trainings, conferences


Knowledge, training and experience in Mediation and Restorative Justice (training certificates required)

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills for interactions with staff, volunteers and program participants
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with volunteers, citizens, customers, other agencies, city departments and staff.
  • Strong technical skills
  • Thorough knowledge of department’s goals, objectives and services.
  • Good organizational skills
  • Good working knowledge of basic office computer programs; Word, Excel, Power Point, Access, Adobe, desk-top publishing
  • Ability to manage time, organize and prioritize work effectively
  • Good keyboarding skills for data entry
  • Good grammar, proofreading and editing skills
  • Good working knowledge of Social Media
  • Knowledge of basic math and accounting; basic budget and finance management.


College Degree or comparable education/experience/training required. Preferred fields include: communications, marketing, public relations, sociology, social work, business. Skills and Experience necessary for this position: marketing and public outreach, volunteer management, mediation and restorative justice experience/training, strong organization and computer skills. Knowledge of the legal and justice system and case management experience preferred. Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.

BACKGROUND CHECK: Annual criminal background check required for employee in a position of trust. Drug test required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from clients, customers, and the general public. Bilingual English/Spanish a plus.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Valid and current driver’s license required. 40-hour Mediation Training Certificate and Certificate of RJ Facilitator training required. Experience mediating and/or facilitating RJ conferences required. Advanced mediation and restorative justice training preferred.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
